Kate de Gruchy is a multi-disciplinary artist living and performing in Joburg. With a background in classical composition, and a specific interest in the intersection of sound, poetry and spirituality, she has been bouncing around Joburg trying to understand rules and then test them.
Kate is primarily a singer/song-writer. She strayed to the guitar when the classical piano got too stressful, although she is slowly returning to the piano with her Fiona Apple-esque piano parts and strong composition background. Kate's songs are influenced by folk, rock, blues and classical music.
She is also heavily influenced by Music Technology, and aims to expand her editing, arranging and mixing skills into the endless realm of Music Technology in the near future.
She cultivates a vulnerable and emotional connection with her audience through her introspective and philosophical lyrics and the idea of music as poetry remains integral throughout her works.
Kate considers music a social connector and an instrument of social change, which is especially inspiring to her. Her works are experimentative and soulful, and her drive for creating and testing the limits is limitless.
